Questions about small kitchens

What decides whether a galley works?

The aisle, and specifically what has to happen in it at once. A cook crouching at a base drawer fills it. An open dishwasher door lies flat across it. Somebody wants to get past both. A galley that cannot hold a person and an open appliance door at the same time reads as a corridor rather than a kitchen, whatever is on the walls. Where the room cannot give that up on both sides, a single run with everything on one wall usually beats two cramped runs facing each other.

Does a small kitchen cost proportionally less?

No, and that surprises people. Cabinetry and countertops scale with the size of the room, but the trades do not. The electrician still runs the small-appliance circuits, the plumber still moves the sink, and the crew still spends a week on demolition and rough-in. Measured against the floor area, a small kitchen looks expensive. Measured as a total, it is the lowest number on this page.

Is an island possible in a small kitchen?

Only if the aisles survive it, and in a genuinely compact room they usually do not. An island has to be walked around on four sides, and every one of those sides is floor the room no longer has. A peninsula run off an existing counter needs walking around on one side instead, and a narrow rolling work table can be pushed out of the aisle when it is in the way. Both give most of the benefit and take back far less.

What gives the biggest gain in a compact kitchen?

Drawers, then lighting, then the refrigerator. Deep drawers make the whole base cabinet reachable instead of the front of it, because the contents come out to you rather than you going in after them. Undercabinet lighting removes the shadow you cast on your own counter. And a counter-depth refrigerator hands the difference between a deep box and a flush one straight back to the aisle, in a room where that difference is the whole margin between passable and awkward.
